Ketogenic diet and epilepsy

Natural healing of epilepsy is usually aimed at reducing the incidence of seizures. According to previous experience, the best effect is achieved by using a specific diet, known as a ketogenic diet.

Ketogenic diet

A ketogenic diet means reduced (minimal) carbohydrate intake, increased fat intake and adequate protein intake. This type of diet aims to take away carbohydrates, and by burning fat, the liver produces ketones, which led to the name of the ketogenic diet.

Thus, ketones are substances that occur when the organism does not get enough carbohydrates, which are usually used to obtain energy, but is forced to degrade fat for that purpose instead.

And here’s why ketones are necessary for the treatment of epilepsy:

Ketone bodies circulate through blood and brain, as a substitute for glucose. For epileptics it is very important that their brain instead of glucose gets ketones as a source of energy. It has been scientifically proven that ketosis (elevated blood ketone levels) in people suffering from this disease reduces the frequency of seizures.

Treatment of epilepsy in this way has been applied for a long time, primarily in children. According to some statistics, about 50% of children and young people suffering from epilepsy who used some form of ketogenic kid had a reduced number of attacks by at least 50%, and the effect of the child lasts for a long time even after cessation of this diet. Particularly joyful are the many testimonials of those individuals who have been using ketogenic diets to help prevent seizures from happening again.

Although it has undoubtedly been proven that a ketogenic diet reduces the number and frequency of seizures, such treatment should be carried out exclusively under the supervision of physicians and trained dietitians. The ketogenic diet contains fatty products such as butter,  sour cream and oil. On the other hand, a strict balance of carbohydrate, protein and fat intake is maintained in each meal, which must be prescribed by dietitians.

During the childhood, constant checks of the level of ketones in the body are carried out, for two reasons; To see if the diet has an effect and is safe for the overall health of the patient. The ketone level can be determined by laboratory analysis, and the sample can be taken from blood and urine. In any case, if you are looking for a natural anti-epileptic medication, a ketogenic diet is a great choice.
